I moved to the central coast in 1973 to attend Cal Poly. I married my husband, Steve, a fourth generation farmer from the Pozo Valley. Together we have raised our two children, worked the family farm and devoted ourselves to this community.
Many know me as someone with a strong agricultural background, a work ethic that comes from the struggle of making a living from the land and as a small business owner. For seventeen years I owned and operated Small Wonders Pre-School in Atascadero.
From 2000 to 2004 I worked with San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors as a Legislatives Assistant, serving the constituents of the 5th district. Here I learned about county government and the issues that matter most to our community.
For the past three years, I have worked as a District Representative for Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee. From Sam, I have learned the importance of problem-solving, consensus building and community service. I’ve gained critical experience in working with government agencies on behalf of our constituents. As a 5th District supervisor I will carry on this tradition of service, helping to protect our way of life and ensure that we have a community where all can prosper.

Supervisor Jim Patterson – Statement for Atascadero Chamber’s Business Reporter 3/22/08
As a Cal Poly graduate and 33 year Atascadero resident, I appreciate the diverse needs of District 5. My background in business, ranching, and water conservation enables me to understand and address the major challenges facing our County. I have been successful in setting a new course for County government. We are at a crossroads, and continuing our efforts is essential to bringing a new future to the County. I am committed to ensuring that the county continues to be a safe, healthy and prosperous place to live for ourselves and coming generations.
I am proud of improving government accountability and fiscal responsibility. I have implemented a priority-setting process so Board members and Department Heads can make better planning and financial decisions. As Chair of the Board, I streamlined meetings to increase public participation.
There is much more to do. We must work cooperatively to grow our economy and assist local businesses, encourage new jobs and intelligently plan growth to reduce sprawl, preserve agricultural land, and protect property rights.
I actively listen and respect everyone’s opinions. Together, we can make decisions that protect our quality of life, today and in the future. I am honored to be your County Supervisor. For more information visit
