Atascadero State Hospital (ASH) enjoys a world-renowned reputation of excellence in providing comprehensive state-of-the-art psychiatric treatment as a fully licensed and accredited forensic mental health facility.
In 1946, the State of California purchased 1,162 acres for $160 thousand dollars to construct a State psychiatric hospital at the southern edge of Atascadero. In 1954 the Atascadero State Hospital opened as a completely self-contained facility staffed with 390 employees. Since that time it has evolved into a maximum-security facility licensed for 1,160 beds and has a staff of 2,057.
