I want to thank the Chamber for the opportunity to speak, along with Mayor Heather Moreno, at the Leader’s Lunch. The event was hosted by the Chamber’s Legislative and Economic Council and held at the O’Malley’s beautiful Portola Inn. I appreciate the Legislative and Economic Council’s efforts to host events that promote discussion within our community on important policy issues.
The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport recently celebrated another advancement in air service out of San Luis Obispo. On April 2nd, the airport celebrated the inaugural direct flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth, a hub for American Airlines. This new air service creates the opportunity for one-stop flights to 89 new locations, including South America. This is great news for the tourism industry.
The County has invested heavily in the expansion of the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. The investment has paid off. Since 2016, new direct services to Seattle and Denver have significantly increased activity at the airport. The beautiful new airport terminal is helping attract more flights, and enplanements are rising. With the addition of direct service to Dallas/Ft. Worth, flying to and from San Luis Obispo is more convenient than ever for business or vacation.
Visit SLO CAL has been a great partner in the expansion of air travel. They have been the marketing arm, reaching out to the new destinations and promoting San Luis Obispo as a vacation destination.
Atascadero is seeing local growth in visitor-serving business. New hotels and restaurants are popping up all over the North County in response to a growing tourist economy, and the airport is stepping up to fuel this new growth. If you haven’t been out to the airport or gone to the Visit SLO CAL website, check it out. They are showcasing our North County like never before, and it’s working.
It’s an honor to represent the 5th District.
